As we age, our bodies change in many ways—especially our faces. The older we get, the looser the skin on the face becomes, which often results in saggy, wrinkled skin. However, getting older doesn’t mean that you have to look your age! With the help of a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Peter H. Grossman, MD, you can take years off of your face.
One of the most common procedures to address facial aging is rhytidectomy, also known as a facelift. The facelift procedure, sagging skin, and other tissues on the mid to lower face are lifted, giving you a youthful look that takes years off of you! A facelift can also address other changes in the shape and appearance of your face as a result of aging.
The best candidates for this surgery are women and men in their 40s and 50s. If you want to turn back the hands of time and effortlessly put your best face forward each day, consider undergoing a facelift surgery with the help of a board-certified plastic surgeon in West Hills, CA.
While you may not be able to change your age, you can control how your face portrays your age. Loose skin on the face and neck is all part of aging, but this doesn’t mean that you have to live with a face that makes you feel insecure or lacking confidence. This is where a facelift can rejuvenate your entire look, giving you a naturally youthful face.
The facelift procedure is able to address all sorts of problematic areas on the face by:
- Defining the jawline by reducing jowls
- Removing excess volume from the lower face
- Adding volume to the cheek area
- Correcting a sagging, wrinkled neck
- Smoothing nasolabial folds and lines around the nose, chin, and mouth
A facelift procedure can also address other areas on the face, especially the eyes. Eyelid surgery can be used to reduce puffy bags under the eyes, as well as to lift lax upper eyelids that may be droopy. Some patients even opt to use injectable filters to restore fullness to various regions on the face.
There are many different facelift options to choose from. In order to determine which facelift procedure is best for you, you’ll want to meet with a board-certified surgeon in West Hills, CA. Our top surgeon, Peter H. Grossman, MD, will work with you to determine your individual needs so that the right facelift procedure can be identified to give you the best results possible.
Mini Face Lift
A mini facelift, which is also known as a short scar facelift, provides a natural facelift with fewer incisions than a traditional facelift. With a mini facelift, there is no incision used under the chin. Instead, incisions are made around the ear, which are often limited to being placed just in front of the ear.
A mini facelift offers facial rejuvenation and offers subtle improvements to the face. This procedure is performed relatively quickly under local anesthesia, but most patients will need a traditional facelift in the future for the longevity of the results.
The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) is the system of tissues that are located just beneath the skin of the face. The SMAS is just above the parotid gland, as well as all of the facial nerves that control facial musculature.
When SMAS is manipulated during a facelift, the longevity of the results is greatly approved. The more extensive the SMAS dissection is, the longer the results will last. As SMAS manipulation becomes more involved and extensive, the facelift starts to become a full facelift versus a mini-lift.
The traditional facelift, also known as a full facelift, addresses various regions of the face, including the neck and cheeks. A full facelift involves a submental incision on the neck, as well as incisions that start in front of the ear and extend around it.
Incisions are also placed along the front of the ear in order to lift a flap of skin. When the skin is pulled back, the contour of the face is changed in order to achieve a more youthful shape and look. Before the flap is closed, any excess skin is also removed to achieve the best look.
With a full facelift, a neck lift procedure is also completed. A small incision is used in order to remove excess fat over the platysmal muscles, which are found in the neck region.

Does a facelift procedure provide natural results?
The results of your facelift procedure are often dependent on the health of your skin, as well as the skill and experience of the plastic surgeon that you choose.
We’ve all seen poor facelift results, where the patient’s face looks overly stretched. However, today’s facelift procedure methods are much more sophisticated, allowing the skin to be lifted and the underlying muscles to be tightened.
How long does the surgery last?
The length of a facelift procedure varies from patient to patient. However, most procedures take around 3-4 hours. Smaller procedures, such as a mini facelift or a brow lift, can often be completed in around two hours.
If a facelift includes other procedures, such as an eye lift, surgery time can be as long as 5-6 hours.
How long does it take to recover from a facelift?
For most patients, two weeks is plenty of time to recover from a facelift. After the procedure, you can expect visible swelling, as well as residual bruising. You should also expect your facial area to feel extremely sensitive for at least three weeks.
While you will be able to return to work after a few weeks, make note that the final result of your surgery won’t be visible until around three months.

Facelift Q & A
What types of facelifts are there?
A facelift rejuvenates an aging neck and face by tightening and removing excess skin. Patients who complain of sagging skin in the neck or deep wrinkles on the face are often candidates for a facelift. Dr. Grossman performs typical surgical procedures, such as a mid-facelift that focuses on restoring a smooth look to the lower eyelids and cheek areas or a pre/post-auricular, open neck lift that dramatically tightens the skin of the neck.
What are less invasive facelifts?
Will I need to stay in the hospital?
Facelift procedures are performed in our outpatient surgery center. The surgery typically lasts from four to five hours. After the surgery, patients are transferred to the recovery area and monitored carefully for a time before being sent home with aftercare instructions. You’ll also need someone available to provide transportation following the surgery. It’s generally two to three weeks before you can return to work and the recovery phase includes several office visits for postsurgical care.
Dr. Grossman provides innovative laser techniques, such as PrecisionTx ™ Lift and SmartLift™ Laser, for patients who want the benefits of a facelift but can’t spare the time for the recovery period associated with a more invasive surgical procedures. Dr. Grossman will detail the different options available during your consultation and recommend the best method available for the outcome you desire.
What is a PrecisionTx lift or SmartLift?
Both systems use laser energy to melt unwanted fat beneath facial or neck skin which is then safely removed through a small suction device. Several small incisions are required to insert the tube that holds the laser fiber and suction device.
The laser energy also stimulates collagen production in the deeper skin layers, which tightens the skin and significantly decreases the appearance of droopy, wrinkled skin. A typical laser lift takes approximately one hour and most patients return to work within two to three days.
Dr. Grossman sometimes incorporates laser technology such as Cynosure’s SmartSkin® laser for skin resurfacing and rejuvenation along with a facelift. He’s also experienced in the increasingly popular transfer of fat from your belly during a facelift to add youthful volume to the face.
